I have been running a venerable Asus P9X79 motherboard with an i7 3960X processor since 2012. I was looking for a relatively inexpensive drop in Xeon with a higher core count and better speed. I had read that this motherboard was compatible with a number of Xeon Ivytown CPU’s and indeed that was the case. I got this Xeon CPU which is effectively an 8 core version of the 4960X and it was a drop in and works fantastic. Even the original cooler works perfectly.
