I purchased this CPU as a backup for an HP EX490 sever as the E5200 is becoming harder to get. Hopefully I will never have to use it but is was cheap insurance for a much larger investment in the server, hard disk drives and data that is backed up.I rate the product as a 4 star item. The main reason is that the CPU is shown in the product photo as a new unit in an INTEL box. It does not come in an INTEL sealed box but it is enclosed in a small plastic CPU holder. Some reviews state that the unit comes with a heat sink coated with heat dissipating thermal compound and a fan and that is not true, at least in my case. The other issue is that some reviews state that this is a Slay version CPU and it is not. Slay is directly compatible with HP EX 485 motherboards for example. INTEL actually made three versions of the sSpec of the CPU and they are the SLAY7 or QFHQ or the SLB9T. The chip I got is a SLB9T which is the least compatible version with some HP Home media servers and may require BIOS update to work properly. Even with the update you may lost some functionality issues on some severs. Just make sure which version you are getting if you are getting this as an update for an older HP EX version server. Do your home work. The SLAY7 or QFHQ are stepping model M0 and they require no bios upgrade on the HP EX485. The SLB9T is a R0 stepping model and will require a bios update which requires more computer skills and work. Because of the R0 stepping some items in the BIOS will need to be modified before the CPU is used. You cannot simply change the CPU without making necessary BIOS changes, if you try you will end up with a server that will not boot up on an ex485.Overall this is a good processor but you should know what you are getting so you understand what work you will have to do. It has a good sales price.
